Vietnam Women's Volleyball Team Faces Personnel Crisis Ahead of Asiad 20

Vietnam's women's volleyball team is facing a serious personnel crisis ahead of the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20), scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026, in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. After concluding the 2026 Asian Championship in China with a depleted squad, head coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt is confronting an extremely difficult roster puzzle with only three outside hitters remaining. During the Asian Championship, the team lost two key players. Nguyễn Thị Uyên, one of the outside hitters capable of ensuring quality first-pass reception, suffered a serious injury and could not continue competing. Given the personnel constraints, many experts believe coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt may need to shift toward a defensive-counterattack style, prioritizing blocking and digging rather than structured attacks. The experience gap is also a concerning issue. While top Asian teams typically field outside hitters aged 22-28 at their peak, Vietnam must place trust in two talents aged 17 and 18 at a highly competitive event like ASIAD. Although these young players may have been selected for their reception and defensive abilities, maturity in physicality and tactics at the international level remains a significant challenge. Trần Thị Thanh Thúy's role becomes more crucial than ever as the team's primary and nearly sole attacking option. Opponents at ASIAD 20 will easily target her position, making Vietnam's offense predictable and containable. The lack of a reliable second attacking option means the team risks stagnation against solid defenses of major teams. Furthermore, every match at ASIAD 20 earns FIVB world ranking points, directly affecting the pathway to Olympic qualification for Los Angeles 2028. An unfavorable result at this event could push Vietnam further down the world rankings, creating additional difficulties for the team's Olympic qualification efforts in the next two years. Preparation time for ASIAD 20 is running short as the Asian Championship has just concluded. V-League players must balance club obligations with national team duties, while injuries and health issues show no signs of being fully resolved. With a roster nearly complete and no room for error, coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt faces one of the most difficult decisions of his coaching career.
