Crisis in Vietnam Women's Volleyball Squad Ahead of Asiad 20: Loss of Uyên, Như Quỳnh and Two 17-18 Year Old Players

In the 12-square-meter room where I collect volleyball data, I often pause for a few seconds before writing. The moment today, hearing that Nguyễn Thị Uyên suffered a serious injury in the 2026 Asian Championship and Vi Thị Như Quỳnh is absent for health reasons, I feel the fragility of the trust in the Vietnamese women's volleyball team. Based on my experience watching SEA Games 29 matches, where Dương Văn Thái fell at the last hurdle and sat on the track, I realize failure is not always interviewed immediately. It comes like a stumble, leaving a gap for the stands and for the writer himself. This crisis is not just news, but a story about the silence of the stands when trust in the young generation is wavering before Asiad 20 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The context shows the Vietnamese women's team participated in the 2026 Asian Championship in China with a depleted squad. Head coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt only has three outside hitters, two of whom are 18-year-old Phạm Quỳnh Hương and 17-year-old Bùi Thị Ánh Thảo. Trần Thị Thanh Thúy is the only mainstay, but with a 12-player roster for Asiad versus 14 at the Asian Championship, cutting one player is almost mandatory. According to AVC/OCA analysis, the reception system heavily relies on Nguyễn Thị Uyên for first-pass quality. With Uyên absent, this system is at risk of collapse against strong teams like China, Japan, or Thailand with aggressive jump-float and jump-serve rotations. Như Quỳnh previously shared the attacking load with Thanh Thúy, but now only Thanh Thúy bears the main pressure, making opponents easy to key-mark and matches predictable. The core insight is in tactical analysis. The Vietnamese volleyball system is a fast and variable Asian style, but it depends on reception quality. Losing Uyên and Như Quỳnh weakens the reception system significantly. The two 17-18-year-old girls, though promising, lack the physical maturity and tactical discipline for Asiad level. Compared to European power teams, Vietnam is short on depth. While spike efficiency or perfect pass rate data is unavailable, from observation, single-point dependency on Thanh Thúy makes the tactic exploitable. In the locker room, the coach may shift to a defense-first approach, prioritizing blocking and digging over early offense. This is pragmatic but lower-ceiling. Contrarian angle: Instead of worrying, the young generation could be an opportunity. But from historical data, these two lack international experience, making them vulnerable to pressure in the knockout stage. The Asian Championship showed Đinh Thị Thúy or Nguyễn Thị Phương's inconsistency, while Hoàng Hồng Hạnh or Đỗ Lại Yến Nhi from military or Hóa chất Đức Giang teams are unproven. With the 12-player limit, no margin for additional injuries, roster selection is a zero-sum decision. Comparing to Croatia's 2026 World Cup endurance wins, Vietnam is in the mid-cycle Olympic 2028 phase where world ranking points are directly affected. Each Asiad match carries FIVB points, and early losses could setback the cycle. Takeaway: Sports teaches patience and listening to one's own breath. In the 12-square-meter room, 120 races taught me to listen to the athlete's breath after failure. Before Asiad 20, Vietnam needs to build from the young, but alongside that is long-term investment in the OH position to avoid single-point attacks. Based on my match-watching experience, I bet on the forgotten stories of young players where the stands' silence can be a lesson on the weight of trust. In the end, volleyball is not about stars, but about how the team changes every day to overcome the crisis.
